Waterway Champions is an environmental project with a difference.
We’ve all seen shopping trolleys in canals and plastic bags in rivers and we all are aware that this isn’t great for wildlife or the people who use and enjoy these waterway areas. Waterway Champions gives young people aged 16-25 the opportunity to help identify these littered areas along London's rivers and canals and help do something about it.
This three-year project has been made possible by funding from v - the youth volunteering charity for England, and is coordinated by Thames21 - London's leading waterways charity.
Thames21 is an environmental charity that aims to transform neglected and littered waterways into areas that everyone can use and enjoy by encouraging all Londoner's to treat their waterways with care and respect.
Waterways can be important green spaces in heavily-built areas. They are highly valued and used both by young people and the wider community. Too often however, they can be neglected eyesores. This project aims to give young people the opportunity to transform local rivers and canals, and help create a neighbourhood they are proud of.
